If you are thinking about starting welding whilst you are at home, then you’re probably feeling a bit intimidated by a tool that can harness enough energy to fuse metal together. A tool that if used improperly can injure you. There are many reasons to why people want to take up welding, the most obvious one is to learn as much as they can so that they can have a career in it, but some people are just interested in being able to fix and build things for their home.
Whatever your reason is for wanting to start welding, there are a few things that you need to realise first. For starters, you can’t just start welding straight away. You need to understand the equipment that you are using, how they will react and if you are good enough to tackle the project. Don’t forget that learning something like welding will take time, however, the more you practice, the better you will be.
Safety is Absolutely NOT Optional
The most important thing to realise when it comes to welding, is that safety is not an option. You can get severely injured if you do not take the proper care. You need to make sure that you have the right gear including fire resistant jackets, safety glasses, welding gloves and an approved welding helmet. You will want to make sure that you cover any exposed area of your body, as you don’t want these to be burned.
You will also want to make sure that you have proper ventilation (or can at least make use of a fume extraction system) as this will make the area that you are working in safer. Not only that, but an obvious point is that you shouldn’t weld on (or near) flammable materials, so make sure that you pick a location where you have plenty of room for sparks to fly. Otherwise you might find yourself starting a fire (which is why you should have a fire extinguisher on hand, just in case something happens).
Get the Right Equipment for You
If you are planning on welding and you haven’t done something like this before. Then you need to make sure that you get the right equipment. There are two different welding styles – you’ve got the MIG and the TIG. If you are a beginner, you are best to start with the MIG as this is the easier option. However, if you feel like you can manage, then just use whichever piece of equipment you want (obviously depending on what you will need it for, and what skills you have).
If you want to make sure that you have all the tools that a serious metalwork shop would have, then you might also want to make sure that you have something like these metal grinders as well. If you’ve never brought one before, then you might not realise how much of a difficult decision this is. There are several things that you will need to think about, so make sure you know exactly what you want. Before you buy any equipment, you need to decide if it is the right sort of equipment for you, and if it does exactly what you need it for.
Learn as Much as You Can
You won’t know what equipment to get though, if you don’t learn as much as you can beforehand. There are loads of different ways that you can learn how to weld, such as by going to a class at your local school, or even by taking part in online classes and learning from virtual tutorials. You just need to figure out what is the best way for you to learn, and then you can just go from there. If you don’t think online learning is right for you, then go to a class etc.
You can’t just start welding without any training, since this is a high-risk activity that can lead to serious injuries and death. You need to learn the basics at least and have a good understanding of how you can stop accidents from happening. The way to do this, is to learn how to use welding equipment properly. So, if you are planning on starting welding as a hobby, then make sure that you are prepared to learn as much as you can about it. You never know, you might find that your welding hobby can turn into a side hustle and can help you earn a little extra income.
